Rickey Henderson, the "Man of Steal," is one of the greatest Major League Baseball players of all time and my favorite baseball player growing up. He played for over 20 years and still has the records for stolen bases (1406, current active leader is around 560), runs scored (2295, current active leader around 1846), lead-off home runs (81), single season stolen bases (130), unintentional walks (2129). He also ranked highly in a number of other categories. You can check out his full stats here, including some yearly rankings/awards. They're pretty nice.
I found this highlight video of his career.
Finally! What a great post for the Rick Show. I remember drawing a picture of him holding up that record breaking stolen base for art class. It was a terrible picture since I have no drawing skills...but it speaks to how awesome that moment was for me to attempt a drawing like that.
ReplyDeleteI also recall that. It made me a little sad that he lingered for a couple of years in the minors before he called it quits. Seems like some people thought of him as that guy that just wouldn't admit he was too old. But at the same time, he was holding his own with guys 20-25 years younger than him.
DeleteRickey is the only baseball player I ever really collected cards of.
ReplyDeleteWho needs Topps or Upper Deck when you have Jimmy Dean. A great card/breakfast sausage company.
ReplyDeleteI love any card that does not have the approval of the League. I had a bunch of cards from Post that also had to remove the team names and logos from the uniforms. Awesome stuff.
DeleteI don't think I ever even notice the card didn't have any logos until when I was taking the picture of it to post here. That seems like high quality photoshopping for the early 90s
DeleteI'd also never heard the song that accompanies the video before. It's called Daddy Cool by German disco group Boney M. It's a bit catchy
