The rickshaw. A marvel of the transportation world.
Originating in the mid 1800s, these guys rocked. You could get around faster, and someone else did all the work! Rickshaw originates from a Japanese word meaning "human-powered," and that they were. There seems to be a slight dispute over where exactly the rickshaw was first invented and by whom (you can see the linked wikipedia articles for the info). Anyway you cut it, this largely Asian form of transport is the rick-est. It has evolved, though. Once mostly pulled by hand, the rickshaw became largely cycle-powered. And in today's age, many have even become motorized.
Some still prefer it the old-fashioned way, though:
Have any members of the Rick Show readership ridden in a rickshaw (or pulled one)?
There were a ton of cycle powered rickshaws in Tempe at the bowl game. I was surprised. It is on my bucket list to both ride in and pull a rickshaw. Maybe rickshow can have a weekend retreat with all things rick.
ReplyDeleteI have yet to ride or pull a rickshaw. Much like Tempe, they do have a lot of cycle powered ones during Rockies games.
ReplyDeleteThe government!!!
I should clarify: the rickshaws are outside of the Rockies stadium waiting to take people around downtown...they are not actually used in the playing of Rockies games.
ReplyDeleteOH YEAH! I should also mention that at the Rockies games they have a Rickshaw race on the jumbo-tron. You know, it's one of those animated races where you are supposed to pick one of three racers to root for.
ReplyDeleteDang...I have so much to say about rickshaw's!!! Or am I just trying to get my comment count up?
EtR, I'm glad I found a subject that you are so knowledgeable and passionate about.
ReplyDeletePaul rocks at those animated race games. He was 6/7 this year in the Iowa Corn pickup race. I am sure digital rickshaw races would be no different.
ReplyDeleteDid you guys know that Iowa City has their own rickshaw business downtown? They bicycle you wherever you wanna go within a certain region, and you pick the price. You can ride in one and not even have to leave Iowa!!
ReplyDeleteYes, you mean IC Ecocabs. I remember when they started up, but I wasn't sure if they were still operating, and had mostly forgotten about them.
ReplyDeleteBut I found this page,
and this facebook page, so maybe they still are
