This guy is also Rick, from Rick's Christmas Trees somewhere in Washington state (via Steve Zugschwerdt at the Kitsap Sun).  I'm guessing it might be this very Rick who gave away Christmas Trees for a donation to the local food bank.  Good for you, Rick!
Apparently tree farming is a good business for a Rick to take up.

Christina Ricci (let's face it, 'Ricci' is really just 'Ricky') is the actress you probably first knew from her role as Wednesday Addams in the 1990s Addams Family movies.  She's still around doing plenty of acting, but hasn't been quite as popular since.


She apparently grew her armpit hair out for a role once...

Ricky Rubio

Ricky Rubio is an NBA player for the Minnesota Timberwolves. You might know him from such films as "gets drafted by Minnesota but refuses to play there for two years, instead choosing to stay in Spain."  It was a good flick; ask any Timberwolves fan.

Ricky started playing in the Euroleague at age 16 and put up some pretty good numbers in his European games.  He also played for the U-16 Spanish national team in '06 and the senior team in the '08 Olympics.  His achievement list has a lot on it for someone who is only 21.  His first NBA season was successful, and I think he lived up the hype surrounding him.  Unfortunately, he also tore his ACL and didn't finish the season.  Let's hope, for the sake of the ricking world that his recovery is speedy and he is better than ever in the upcoming season.

The Rickey

In a shocking development, I learned over the holiday that there is a drink called a "rickey" and that I have never known it as such.  Given that, you know, I have a Rick blog...I find myself slightly ashamed for not knowing about this sooner.  On the other hand, these are the types of things that you learn in an endeavor such as this, and I am pleased that I can share my learnings with others

"The Rickey" is a family of drinks that seem almost too simple.  You take liquor, squeeze half a lime and then also drop the lime in the glass and add water.  Let Esquire tell you just how easy it is.  

Per Wikipedia, it was originally created with bourbon whiskey in Washington, D.C. at Shoomaker's bar by bartender George A. Williamson in the 1880s, purportedly in collaboration with Democratic lobbyist Colonel Joe Rickey, and it became a worldwide sensation when mixed with gin a decade later. It is commonly referred to as "air conditioning in a glass," they write.  The mojito is its cousin.

On a side note, there appears to be a bar called "Gin Rickeys" in Dubuque, IA.  One website says "Located at 14th and Central, Gin Rickeys brings a clean, relaxed, classy atmosphere for working professionals to be able to let go of their daily problems. Once the weekend evenings arrive, you will find all the sexy young dancers here enjoying all the cocktails their hearts desire! "

I like the idea of putting the actual lime in the glass, but I can see why bars just use the juice and then put a garnish piece of lime, I suppose.

Rikki Don't Lose That Number

By Steely Dan, Rikki Don't Lose that Number propelled the album Pretzel Logic to #4 on the Billboard charts in 1974. 


Want to know who Rikki is, and why that number is important?  Well, per Wikipedia:
In the March 24, 2006 issue of Entertainment Weekly, in an article titled "Back to Annandale", it was revealed that Rikki Ducornet was the apparent inspiration for the song due to a friendship songwriter Donald Fagen had with Ducornet while he attended Bard College. Ducornet was pregnant and married at the time, but recalls Fagen did give her his phone number at a college party while attending Bard and said that she believed she was the subject of the song. Fagen would not confirm the story.

Here's the deal.  You probably don't want to watch these in their entirety.  I watched the first 30 seconds and decided it was unbearable for me, so I just skipped around enough to make sure I wanted to post it.   You might want to skip around as well, but I'd say you should watch a bit of it to get a feel for what the whole thing is like.

Neil Patrick Harris

Neil Patrick Harris acts on stage and screen, sings, makes appearances on TV, and other stuff.  You know him as Doogie Howser. I know you do, even if you won't admit it or don't know it. Sure, he's gotten famous again now in How I Met Your Mother, but he was one of those child actors, so we have to remember it.  Feel free to browse his filmography if you'd like, it's actually quite large.   Or, you can just watch this video which takes you through his career.

Da'Rick Rogers

Da'Rick Rogers finds himself on Rick Show thanks to our legion of readers who are mindful of Ricks as they go through their daily lives.  This is a pretty good catch.  I mean, his name is not only Rick, but 'Da' Rick!  Spectacular! 
 Da'Rick was a standout wide receiver for the University of Tennessee, leading the SEC in receptions (67) and receiving yards (1040) in 2011.  He was a 2012 pre-season all-American by Phil Steele.   His future in the SEC was bright for this season...until the drugs got him.  He was suspended from the UT football team and rather than sit out the season, decided to transfer to Tennessee Tech a week after his punishment was handed down.  He played immediately, and through the first two games had 8 receptions for 163 yards.  Nice start for the 2012 season for Da'Rick.

Rick Neuheisel

Football season has started, so Rick Neuheisel has something to do.  It won't be coaching, though, for the first time in a while.  Rick's been coaching since 1988 between the NCAA and NFL, most recently coaching his alma mater, UCLA, from 2008-2011.  His head coaching record of 87-59 isn't spectacular, but it's not too horrible, either.  Plenty of coaches end up doing far worse. 

This year he'll be a studio and game analyst for the Pac-12 networks

He once apologized to the fans after a football game for how bad his team was:

Profiles in Rickery: Ricotta

Our newest profile is that of a special dairy product, ricotta.  People think it is cheese, and I did as well, but it is not.  Not technically, at least.  It's really a product made from the byproducts of cheese-making.  The Italians really love ricotta, so if you're making Italians dishes, consider adding some ricotta.  I might.

Mark Richt

Mark Richt is the head football coach at the University of Georgia.  Since we're working our way towards the 2012 NCAA season, let's talk about him.  He's been there since 2001, which is kind of a long time in today's football landscape.  He's got a 106-38 record.  That's better than I thought he had.  He does not like being asked about suspensions of his players.  In fact, he resents it:

Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat

As I've noted before, pro wrestling and the Rick name go hand-in-hand. Rick Show has taught me a lot about wrestlers and their histories.  That's why we are talking about Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat.  
There are a few problems I have after doing my research, however:
First off, his birth name is Richard Henry Blood. Blood! His given name was Blood and he went by Steamboat?! (He took the Steamboat name from another Hawaiian wrestler, but still...seems like a waste)
Secondly, why you feel the need to add "The Dragon" when your last name is Steamboat, I don't understand. I feel like there's got to be something cool you could just do with Steamboat. I suppose that's why I'll never be tasked with creating a successful pro wrestler, though.

Erik "The Red" Denmark

In hindsight, I probably should have saved the last Rick Derringer post for this week.  Oh well.  If you want to celebrate being an American, you can go back to it.

I mentioned a while back that were multiple Erik the Red's to discuss.  Erik "the Red" Denmark is a competitive eater and as of this post, ranked #11 of MLE (major league eating).  He has a blog here on blogger (Not updated too regularly.  Maybe he'll stop by here, though!) and I found a site that apparently just tracks the results of eating contests (you can search by eater).  Looks like he currently holds two eating records, Shrimp and Native American Fry Bread. That's two more than any of us have.

Jan Ullrich

The Tour de France starts this weekend, so what better time to talk a little about cycling.
Jan Ullrich is a successful professional cyclist and the first German to win the Tour de France, in 1997.  He was one of those names that you regularly saw during Lance Armstrong's heyday.  He is currently retired and his career ended with (as seems to be the case with many cyclists recently) some doping charges.

Rickey Henderson

Rickey Henderson, the "Man of Steal," is one of the greatest Major League Baseball players of all time and my favorite baseball player growing up.  He played for over 20 years and still has the records for stolen bases (1406, current active leader is around 560), runs scored (2295, current active leader around 1846), lead-off home runs (81), single season stolen bases (130), unintentional walks (2129).  He also ranked highly in a number of other categories.  You can check out his full stats here, including some yearly rankings/awards.  They're pretty nice.

Profiles in Rickery: The Richter Scale

You hear about the Richter Scale whenever there is an earthquake, but what do we really know?  Well, it was developed in 1935 by Charles F Richter at the California Institute or Technology to compare the size of earthquakes.  And it did just that.  For more details, the basic sciencey stuff is here, and a simpler, normal words description here.   Although people enjoy finding out how big quakes are on the Richter scale (it does have a catchy name), it has been mostly replaced since the 1970s with the Moment Magnitude Scale for large earthquakes.

Ricky's Theme

Richie Rich

From Rick Rickert, let's move on to another "double rick," although by Rick Show standards, a bit less pure.

Richie Rich (or Rickie Rick, as I currently prefer.  I'm sure somewhere in Europe someone calls him that) was a cartoon in the early 80s, based on comic books of the same name.  If you didn't figure it out from his name, the kid is, uh...rich.  Richie Rich.  He has things rich people have. There are more dollar signs in this cartoon than you would normally think would be appropriate.   However, given that the word 'rich' is in his name twice, maybe it's legit.  Old cartoons are fun.

Rick Rickert

Rick Rickert's playing career may not make him too noteworthy, but his name sure does.  Double Rick!  He played at the University of Minnesota, and was Freshman of the Year in the Big Ten in 2001.  He decided to turn pro after his sophomore year, and got drafted 55th overall.  Hopefully he thought "turning pro" meant travelling the world playing in different basketball leagues, because that's what he's done.

Per Wikipedia:
Rickert failed to make the team and went to play in Slovenia. Since then, Rickert has played with: Krka Novo Mesto (Adriatic League/Euroleague), Timberwolves (NBA), Asheville Altitude (D-League), Panellinios B.C. Athens (Greece), Lleida Bàsquet (Spain - 2nd Division), Fayetteville Patriots (D-League), Detroit Pistons (NBA), Colorado 14ers (D-League), the D-League All Star Team that traveled to China, representing the U.S. in the world tournament (D-League), and the New Zealand Breakers (Australasian Basketball League).
In 2004 he got punched by Kevin Garnett during a pickup game.  Sadly, there doesn't appear to be video.  However, I found a picture, here.

In the end, possibly the most interesting thing I know about Rick Rickert is that he was interrogated by a New Zealand journalist(singer?something?) named "Huny La Trapp."

Ricki Lake

I know there's been some mumbling in the Rickosphere about how Ricki Lake hasn't been introduced on Rick Show yet.  I just didn't know what direction I wanted to go in.  I've decided to keep it simple.  People loved her talk show, so let's just show some of it.  Below is a section of her "Best of 5 Seasons" episode.  Some of the those clothes make it worth watching by themselves.



Update: I forgot to mention that Ricki is apparently starting a new talk show this year.  Perhaps we'll discuss that more at a later point.

Ricks in the Pros

SBnation  had an article not too long ago detailing the decline of Bobs in American professional sports, entitled "The Bob Famine" (Thanks to reader EtR for finding this).  Essentially, it found that nearly no professional athletes are named Bob anymore.  Sure, there are some Bobby and Roberts, but Bob is almost extinct.  Thanks to Iowa alum Bob Sanders for holding down the fort.

It got me thinking about where Ricks are at in that regard.  I'm not really sure where the writer got his data, and I'm not going to take the time to do too detailed of an analysis.  However, CBSsports.com makes it easy to get a basic look at where things stand.  They're not so good, my friends.  I have no idea if they were ever very good, but they're not right now.  Luckily, here at Rick Show we appreciate all manner of Ricks, so things are made slightly better.

First things first. You'll notice in the linkage that I was jumping back and forth between sites, because some made it easier to search for variations than others.  Some places seem to be obsessed with people's last names, and some don't (or do) pick up variations of a name when you're not looking for them.

Searching for the NFL turns up no current Ricks.  NFL.com's search brings up a handful of Rickys (but except Ricky Williams, none really have much in the way of stats).  There are also a number of  Richards, and a decent amount of Patricks, Derricks, etc.  NFL.com also has a historical search function, and a simple search for "rick" picks up Rick along with Rick variations, but you can see that there used to be Ricks.  Used to.

I find zero active Ricks in the NBA as well, although per usual, Derricks are showing up well.  Of course Ricky Rubio is there, too.  (Here is the historical search on NBA.com)

A CBSsports.com search on MLB finds two Ricks.  If you're not discouraged by the fact that the MLB.com search says "enter last name,"  you'll find it shows three Ricks.  It also has a historical search function, where you'll find a decent number of Ricks.

The NHL search comes up with two also (or three, depending on who you ask).

Now that I've done all of that, I'm not really sure what the point is if there even is one.  All I know is that there are not a lot of people using the name Rick in the major US pro sports.  Derricks, Patricks and Richards are going to have to get us through this.  Thoughts?

"The Rick Show"

I've been hesitant to give much play to other Rick Shows, but I should probably give them their due. After all, we live in a Rick-filled world.  Since I usually use "Rick Show" without the "The" and they seem to by-and-large prefer to use the "The," we'll let those others go by "The Rick Show" if they want. 

 The Rick Show is a band that hails from Beaumont, Texas.   If you're ever in Beaumont on the 3rd Friday of the month, it seems they'll probably be at The Logon Cafe.  I gather that they show up at MacKenzie's Pub fairly regularly, too

(True story: This might be the first time I've ever typed Beaumont in my life, and now I'm an expert on the nightlife there.)


One more thing:  These are the guys that have the top search result for both "The Rick Show" and "Rick Show" on the major search engines.  I both admire them and despise them for it.

Rick Pitino

I may have said a few days ago that I wouldn't reward an Elite Eight appearance with a post, but I have decided that another Final Four appearance for Mr. Pitino makes it worthwhile.  And so here we are.

Rick Pitino is a basketball coach (of course).  He coaches college ball for Louisville right now, but is also known for his stints at Providence and Kentucky, as well as time coaching in the NBA.  Some people also know him for is his hair and/or clothes.  He's the only coach to lead 3 different schools to the NCAA Final Four.  I imagine some people might not like him, but his teams have won.  A lot.  And over the weekend, I heard Mike Lupica call him a genius.

Histo'rick'al Figures: St. Patrick

As I'm sure you are all well aware, it was recently St. Patrick's Day.  The holiday is named for the patron saint of Ireland, St. Patrick and is celebrated on the date of his death.  What did this guy do that we celebrate him still, and here (we don't live in Ireland, after all)?  That all depends on who you ask or which legend you believe.  Maybe he banished the snakes from Ireland.  Maybe he made the shamrock cool.  Maybe it's enough to be a patron saint.  Maybe he was really a leprechaun.  Maybe we just think the Irish are cool, or that green is a good color.  Who knows.

Regardless of what we know about St. Patrick, for many in the US, his holiday is a celebration of Ireland itself, or of the color green.   So we wear green, we have parades, we make rivers green, we make beer green, and we drink.

Rick Axelson

You probably never knew Rick Axelson existed.  He does.  I have proof:

In a first for Rick Show, we've received reader-mail.  I didn't know things like that happened for blogs like this, but apparently they do.  And so now you know.  Rick Axelson of Iowa City, IA gets mail.  First class mail at that.  And from Fidelity.  Sounds like a real classy guy. I bring this all up because I have it from a reputable source that it's his birthday this week.  Happy Birthday, Rick!

Rick Martel

One thing Rick Show has taught me is just how important the name Rick is in the wrestling world.   We've already seen Ric Flair and Rick Rude.  Now we take a look at Rick "The Model" Martel.  Rick Martel was a pro wrestler from the 1970s through 1990s, across a number of organizations.  He is also Canadian.  It's always crucial to know who is Canadian and who is not.   I found this nice "where are they now" article on the WWE website about him, if you want a little more of a personal feel than wikipedia provides.

Rick adopted the "The Model" moniker partway through his career, so it's important to recognize him as a wrestler both with and without it, however it is with it that he made the best promos.  
He was also arrogant.  Arrogance...

Histo'rick'al Figures: Patrick Henry

When I was in elementary school, my class did a musical.  I don't really recall the name (although by the power of the internet, it appears to be "Let George Do It!")  There's one song that really stuck with me all this time.  I'm pretty sure I had a line in it, and that it was a line about Patrick Henry (I found the song, here).  The line is "Now Patrick Henry gave a speech, so powerful in its oration.  Give me liberty or give me death."

So, that's mostly what I remember about Patrick Henry.  I must have forgotten much of learning about him in school, but here's the short version:  He was a Founding Father, a good orator, and led the push for independence.


He's mostly known for one line, though, that he reportedly used in a speech:
 "Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, Give me Liberty, or give me Death!"

Anybody a big Patrick Henry fan?  Any awesome Patrick Henry memories (you know, like when you and Pat used to play touch football in the backyard together or something)?

Rikki Tikki Tavi

By popular request, I bring you Rikki Tikki Tavi.  It is a short story by Rudyard Kipling about a mongoose.  It was also made into an animated special in 1975. 

Here's the extra short plot summary:  Family finds mongoose.  Keep it as pet.  Snakes and mongoose are not friends.  Mongoose and snake fight, with mongoose hoping to save human.  Snake dies.  Other snake plots revenge.  Snake and mongoose fight.  Mongoose wins (saving humans).  Mongoose is hero.  Fin

The Rick is Dead, Long Live the Rick

Okay, so neither Rick Perry nor Rick Santorum would really qualify to play the role of king at this point, but that doesn't concern me.   It still somewhat fits the fortunes of the GOP's Ricks this week.  There has been some serious Rick-related political news in the past couple of days, and it'll get all moldy if I don't go with it soon.   First off, Rick Perry (you might remember him from such hits as "I can't..sorry...oops") has decided to abandon his quest to be the nominee for the Republican Party for the 2012 election.  In a rather baffling decision, he chose not to back the other Rick in the race (way to let Ricks down, dude), Rick Santorum.   Speaking of him, in an intriguing twist, Iowa's GOP has now retroactively decided that Rick Santorum got the most votes in the Iowa caucus, but also that getting the most votes doesn't mean you "win".  Think about that.  All-in-all, quite the Rick-filled week for the GOP.  Now if only someone could convince Newt to pronounce his last name "Ging-rick," instead of "Ging-rich."  Then we'd have a lot more to work with.

Rickard's Beer

Rickard's is a Canadian beer.  It is made by Molson Coors.  Beer Advocate gives its brews in the range of a C rating.  In an interesting twist, I've found that it appears Rickard's White is Blue Moon branded using an existing Canadian brand after the Coors/Molson merger.  I thought that I'd never had a Rickard's, but maybe I have, just under a different name.

Rick Steves

Last time we met Rick Steves, he was teaching us how to pack for Europe.  Now he's teaching us how to laugh in Europe.  If you've watched him before, you might think he's a pretty straight-forward, maybe dry type of guy.  Well, you could not be more wrong.  From men chasing their balls to sheep in the ditch, hilarity ensues when Rick Steves' Europe comes to town.  Get ready to LOL!

Profiles in Rickery: The Rickshaw

The rickshaw.   A marvel of the transportation world.

Originating in the mid 1800s, these guys rocked. You could get around faster, and someone else did all the work!   Rickshaw originates from a Japanese word meaning "human-powered," and that they were. There seems to be a slight dispute over where exactly the rickshaw was first invented and by whom (you can see the linked wikipedia articles for the info).  Anyway you cut it, this largely Asian form of transport is the rick-est.  It has evolved, though.  Once mostly pulled by hand, the rickshaw became largely cycle-powered.   And in today's age, many have even become motorized.

Rick Santorum

In hopes of the barrage of political ads easing up for a while, Rick Show has been following the caucus results.

Things I know about Rick Santorum:
1) His name is Rick
2) He is a Republican
3) He was a Senator
4) Only adults are allowed to google his name.
5) He just kinda came out of nowhere and made a late surge to get into a virtual tie for first in the Iowa Caucus.  That gets him a post.

Seriously, that's I all know.  I wasn't really planning on giving him a post anytime soon (or at all).  Anybody got anything they want to say about him?
