Rik Smits is a retired NBA player. He earned his nickname "The Dunkin Dutchman" by being Dutch...and dunking. The dunking part wasn't much of a challenge since Rik was 7'4". He spent his whole career (1988-2000) with the Indiana Pacers, earning one NBA All-Star appearance.
Here's a fun little low-def highlight reel with an unexpected soundtrack

Sorry for the false alarm if you saw this show up yesterday on the reader or anything. I went to schedule and accidentally posted it for a minute.
ReplyDeleteI have fond memories of Rik growing up. He had some good battles with Patrick Ewing if I recall.
ReplyDeleteI had totally forgotten that he was Dutch. In my head I think I had him pegged as Scandinavian -- "The Dunkin' Dane," I guess? Doesn't have quite the same ring to it...
ReplyDeleteI wonder what google analytics has to say about my visit to the Rick Show right now. Hmmmmm....I think it had gone international!!!! And what better post than one about an international NBA player?!?
ReplyDeleteOoooh, Distrito Federal. This week is our first venture into Mexico! Gracias, Rick Show amigo!
