Rick Rickert

Rick Rickert's playing career may not make him too noteworthy, but his name sure does.  Double Rick!  He played at the University of Minnesota, and was Freshman of the Year in the Big Ten in 2001.  He decided to turn pro after his sophomore year, and got drafted 55th overall.  Hopefully he thought "turning pro" meant travelling the world playing in different basketball leagues, because that's what he's done.

Per Wikipedia:
Rickert failed to make the team and went to play in Slovenia. Since then, Rickert has played with: Krka Novo Mesto (Adriatic League/Euroleague), Timberwolves (NBA), Asheville Altitude (D-League), Panellinios B.C. Athens (Greece), Lleida Bàsquet (Spain - 2nd Division), Fayetteville Patriots (D-League), Detroit Pistons (NBA), Colorado 14ers (D-League), the D-League All Star Team that traveled to China, representing the U.S. in the world tournament (D-League), and the New Zealand Breakers (Australasian Basketball League).
In 2004 he got punched by Kevin Garnett during a pickup game.  Sadly, there doesn't appear to be video.  However, I found a picture, here.

In the end, possibly the most interesting thing I know about Rick Rickert is that he was interrogated by a New Zealand journalist(singer?something?) named "Huny La Trapp."
Or maybe that he and his teammates sing Green Day songs in their spare time. (after the jump)

Ricki Lake

I know there's been some mumbling in the Rickosphere about how Ricki Lake hasn't been introduced on Rick Show yet.  I just didn't know what direction I wanted to go in.  I've decided to keep it simple.  People loved her talk show, so let's just show some of it.  Below is a section of her "Best of 5 Seasons" episode.  Some of the those clothes make it worth watching by themselves.

Update: I forgot to mention that Ricki is apparently starting a new talk show this year.  Perhaps we'll discuss that more at a later point.

Ricks in the Pros

SBnation  had an article not too long ago detailing the decline of Bobs in American professional sports, entitled "The Bob Famine" (Thanks to reader EtR for finding this).  Essentially, it found that nearly no professional athletes are named Bob anymore.  Sure, there are some Bobby and Roberts, but Bob is almost extinct.  Thanks to Iowa alum Bob Sanders for holding down the fort.

It got me thinking about where Ricks are at in that regard.  I'm not really sure where the writer got his data, and I'm not going to take the time to do too detailed of an analysis.  However, CBSsports.com makes it easy to get a basic look at where things stand.  They're not so good, my friends.  I have no idea if they were ever very good, but they're not right now.  Luckily, here at Rick Show we appreciate all manner of Ricks, so things are made slightly better.

First things first. You'll notice in the linkage that I was jumping back and forth between sites, because some made it easier to search for variations than others.  Some places seem to be obsessed with people's last names, and some don't (or do) pick up variations of a name when you're not looking for them.

Searching for the NFL turns up no current Ricks.  NFL.com's search brings up a handful of Rickys (but except Ricky Williams, none really have much in the way of stats).  There are also a number of  Richards, and a decent amount of Patricks, Derricks, etc.  NFL.com also has a historical search function, and a simple search for "rick" picks up Rick along with Rick variations, but you can see that there used to be Ricks.  Used to.

I find zero active Ricks in the NBA as well, although per usual, Derricks are showing up well.  Of course Ricky Rubio is there, too.  (Here is the historical search on NBA.com)

A CBSsports.com search on MLB finds two Ricks.  If you're not discouraged by the fact that the MLB.com search says "enter last name,"  you'll find it shows three Ricks.  It also has a historical search function, where you'll find a decent number of Ricks.

The NHL search comes up with two also (or three, depending on who you ask).

Now that I've done all of that, I'm not really sure what the point is if there even is one.  All I know is that there are not a lot of people using the name Rick in the major US pro sports.  Derricks, Patricks and Richards are going to have to get us through this.  Thoughts?

Programming Note

I'm going to be trying out some new templates and color schemes for a little while, so if you see something that you either like or don't like, feel free to leave a comment and let me know.  We'll see where we end up.

"The Rick Show"

I've been hesitant to give much play to other Rick Shows, but I should probably give them their due. After all, we live in a Rick-filled world.  Since I usually use "Rick Show" without the "The" and they seem to by-and-large prefer to use the "The," we'll let those others go by "The Rick Show" if they want.

The Rick Show is a band that hails from Beaumont, Texas.   If you're ever in Beaumont on the 3rd Friday of the month, it seems they'll probably be at The Logon Cafe.  I gather that they show up at MacKenzie's Pub fairly regularly, too

(True story: This might be the first time I've ever typed Beaumont in my life, and now I'm an expert on the nightlife there.)

One more thing:  These are the guys that have the top search result for both "The Rick Show" and "Rick Show" on the major search engines.  I both admire them and despise them for it.
